For students ages 16 and up $168 + $20 lab fee Saturdays, November 9, 16, 23, and 30, 2024 2 – 5 PM Using color to define shapes, the stepping stones to doing still lifes. This class helps people learn how to draw basic shapes and give them visible form and weight. Students will learn basic color values and how to use them to create depth in their drawings. We will work with several different types of pastel including hard pastels (nu-pastels), medium pastels (Rembrandt, Artspectrum) and soft. Students are encouraged to bring the pastels that they have and UART sanded paper; get the sample pack if possible. It is also recommended that the students bring a 8×10 sketch pad as well. Supplies will are listed below. Week 1: The first class will cover basic shapes and shading techniques, as well as finding and using Light, Medium and Dark values. Week 2: The second class will be about giving the shapes from the first week, form and visual weight as well as creating a background that will showcase your forms. Week 3: The third class will be about working with the aforementioned techniques on a basic still life subject. Week 4: The final class will be all about working on a still life using the techniques we have gone over with a more complex still life composition. We will be using several pieces of paper for the first 3 classes so make sure you have 2-3 for each class. Supplies: Basic student pastel set. These can be purchased at Michael’s or any other art supply store. Faber-Castell is a good basic brand or even art loft. (students are encouraged to bring any or all of the pastels they have) Baby Wipes Drawing board to secure your paper to A couple of #2 pencils and an eraser Sketchbook size 8×10 (spiral bound) A pack of UART paper assorted grits (amazon will have it and I will speak with Spokane Art Supply about getting it in as well.) Any one not arriving with paper and sanded pastel surface will be charged $5 per sheet of the instructor’s that they need to use.
